The Two Rivers Mill once again makes paper available for
watercolour painting with the properties demanded by the nineteenth century
masters.
The use of flax in specialist papermaking, followed by
tub-sizing were largely abandoned as manufacturing increased. Now you can paint
on surfaces similar to the linen hand made paper sought out by Turner, Cotman
and Girtin.
|
There are good reasons why Two Rivers
watercolour paper has such a forgiving nature. Gentle hand making allows fibres
to lie laterally in the paper, therefore the colour tends to surface dry, and
not be drawn down into the sheet, thus allowing the artist to work the paint
longer. Tub-sizing and natural drying in airy lofts facilitates smooth
brushwork and toughens the paper surface.
Corrections and vigorous
handling techniques such as washing out, scrubbing and scraping are possible.
If stretching the paper, it is advisable to soak it well beforehand.
Two
Rivers Paper uses flax and cotton, and crystal clear Exmoor water - the purest
materials available to the papermaker. Machine-mould manufacture cannot match
the results of this combination of careful handmaking with the finest
papermaking materials. The sheet price is higher, but its aesthetic and
handling advantages together with its acid-free archival quality easily offset
the premium.
The difference in the material cost of your work will be
small indeed compared to the benefits. |
